This collection contains proceedings of the Indianapolis Common Council and the Indianapolis City-County Council dating from 1839-2003. It chronicles the growth of Indianapolis from a time when it was a town of less than 3,000 people to its present status as a city of over 800,000.
The proceedings have had several titles over the years. They began as the Proceedings of the Common Council of the City of Indianapolis (through April 1877). For a brief time they were called Proceedings of the Common Council, Board of Aldermen, and the Joint Conventions of Said Bodies (May 1877-May 1882) and later carried the title Journals of the Common Council, Board of Aldermen, and the Joint Conventions of Said Bodies (June 1882-1891). The title changed again to Journals of the Common Council of the City of Indianapolis (1892-Jan. 1914) and then underwent a slight change to Journal of the Common Council of the city of Indianapolis, Indiana (1914-1969). After Indianapolis consolidated with the government of Marion County in 1970, the proceedings were called Journal of Proceedings of the City-County Council of Indianapolis-Marion County, State of Indiana.
