Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in the "Ensuring a Blind Review" section of the Author Guidelines have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Title Page:

The title page should provide the following components:

1. Provide the title of the article;

2. List the full names, institutional addresses and email addresses for all authors;

3. Indicate the corresponding author(s).

Abstract:

The Abstract of the manuscript should not exceed 250 words and, where applicable, must be structured into separate sections:

Background, the content and purpose of the study; Methods, how the study was performed and statistical tests used; Results, the main findings; Conclusions, brief summary and potential implications.

Manuscripts not involving a scientific methodology may submit an unstructured abstract not to exceed 250 words.

Manuscript:

Manuscripts should include headings conducive to the article category for which the manuscript is being submitted. For instance, all original Health Impact Assessment research should include the appropriate components: screening, scoping, assessment, reporting/monitoring, and evaluation. Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word.

Acknowledgements:

Acknowledgements may be made for anyone who contributed substantially to the article yet does not meet the criteria for authorships, such as: editing; contributing to conception, design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation; or involvement in drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content.

References:

Please format all papers according to APA style. Please avoid excessive referencing. Click on the link below to check out a great guide on APA referencing:

Illustrations and Figures:

Illustrations should be included in the main manuscript and also must be provided as a separate file(s). Each figure should include a single illustration and able to fit on a single page in portrait format. Please submit illustrations in one of the following formats: PDF; JPEG; EPS.

Each table should be included in the main manuscript text file and also must be submitted in Microsoft Excel. For each figure, the following information must be provided:

  • Figure number
  • Short title of figure or detailed legend, no more than 20 words
  • Cell boundaries are discouraged

Ensuring a Blind Review:

To ensure the integrity of anonymous peer-review, authors must remove identifying information from their manuscript. Please review the below steps to ensure a blind review.

  • The authors of the document should delete their names from the text, references, and footnotes, replacing their names with the word "Author" where needed.
  • The authors of the document should remove personal information from the file properties before submitting:
    • Microsoft Word for Windows
      • Go to File
      • Select Info
      • Click on Check for Issues
      • Click on Inspect Document
      • In the Document Inspector dialog box, select the check boxes to choose the type of hidden content that you want inspected.

      • Click Close
      • Save the document
    • Microsoft Word for MacOS
      • Go to Tools

Fees

In an effort to offset the expenses of operating CHIA, a nominal publication fee for authors is required and payable upon article acceptance. The fee structure is as follows:

  • SOPHIA members will pay $250 per article accepted; non SOPHIA members will pay $300 (membership fee may be paid to SOPHIA prior to manuscript acceptance for reduced submission fee).
  • Students enrolled in a college or university are eligible to publish in the student section of the journal at no cost. All other sections require the full fee.

Please contact the journal staff if you have any questions regarding journal fees.
