Promise and Peril: Assessment and Urban Universities

Abstract

Following a brief historical review of statelevel assessment research and practice, this article discusses the current objectives and outcomes of state-level assessment policies throughout the United States, possible explanations for the gap between assessment policy objectives and outcomes, and the implications for urban institutions of higher education.
