The Distinctive Nature of Fachhochschulen

Abstract

The sector of Fachhochschulen in the German binary system of higher education is characterized by the practice orientation of its programs, a commitment to continuing education, and a strong emphasis on applied research and development and on technology transfer. In these ways, the Fachhochschulen make substantial contributions to the development of their region. Because of the strong demand for admission, as well as the growing need of business and industry for graduates from Fachhochschulen, the government has deci4ed to enhance this sector both quantitatively and qualitatively.
