Metropolitan Universities and the Culture of Research

Abstract

Metropolitan universities are the /and-grant universities of the future. A majority of the problems and challenges faced by society are urban focused. Although higher education collectively must address these problems, metropolitan universities are at the front line. The growing success of urban universities is tied to their increasing ability to integrate service and outreach into their mission. The urban environment is playing an increasing role as a laboratory for education and research. Understanding the role of research in the metropolitan university is central to carrying out successfully the mission of the university.
