Universities and the New Realities
AbstractIn this article, the governor of Arkansas calls on universities to give more consideration to the public need, and to focus more on significant social issues. He calls for more scholarship that can prove its worth by means of the service it provides to the students, the state, and the taxpayers. He cites a number of pertinent activities of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and describes a new funding formula under consideration by the Arkansas legislature that contains a number of productivity factors such as student retention, and provides additional funding for new programs responding to the state's strategic needs.
