AbstractUniversities can help advance society through the provision of public service and generate a substantial return on this investment. With the right incentives, faculty members can be encouraged to undertake major public service efforts that make a difference. But planning and policy program staff need to rethink their roles, serve as catalysts, take risks, aim high, and lead.
