Enterprising Starships: Metropolitan Universities Face the New Millennium

Abstract

The fourth annual conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities generated among its participan a shared sense of urgency and a renewed commitment to the possibilities for urban and metropolitan universities as we face the new millenium. Representing what are more correctly cal/ed"starship" rather than "flagship " institutions, conference participants returned again and again to the core issues of institutionalizing flexibility, fostering change, honoring diversity, encouraging enterprise, and facing urban and metropolitan challenges. This article presents highlights of some of the presentations.
