Queering Campus: Understanding and Transforming Climate

Abstract

Recent research indicates that prejudicial acts against queer students, f acuity, and administrators surface with alarming frequency, in which queer members of the academic community are subjected to physical and psychological harassment, discrimination, and violence that obstruct the achievement of their educational and professional goals. This article discusses the importance of the campus climate in providing an atmosphere conducive to maximizing the creation of knowledge, reviews the current national climate for queer members of the academic community, andproposes strategies for implementing change.
